Whereas my 7 and 9 year old boys are active and whereas their first inclination is toward games and hands on activities, I hesitated to begin such a long history book. However, they were drawn in from the start and we have now completed 30% of the book with 45 minute sessions each day for a week. They remember the stories, and I am fascinated by the modern day references to early Roman culture that I had never realized, which are brought out in Guerber's stories of ancient Rome.Product details

The Story of the Romans Helene Guerber 9781546490050 Books Reviews
Almost all the important people and legends students need to know for the National Latin Exam can be found here. Like most accounts of early Rome, it draws very heavily from Livy. While most literal translations of Livy are nearly incomprehensible or overly formal, this book emphasizes substance and storytelling over strict adherence to the original Latin. The result is readable and entertaining. Elementary school students like this book because they can understand it, high school students like it because it is an efficient and easy read.
Great product I would recommend it again.
Just as one of the other reviewers mentioned this book is NOT the whole book. Note the 63 pages... it should be over 300!! DO NOT BUY. --- The story itself is wonderful... just not this publication.
This is a children's history, for Christian children, who don't mind strange spellings (staid for stayed). She tells stories the Romans might have told, and twists them into Christian fables. She does encourage children to learn Latin and read some of the Roman books and speeches.
Skip the boring, tedious textbooks! Guerber brings history facts to life in story book fashion. I am convinced that children would enjoy learning history in school if they could read from books like this rather than from textbooks. My 6th grade home-schooler read this a few chapters at a time while we were studying Ancient Rome. He always wanted to keep reading farther than what I had assigned him for that day. I highly recommend this book for 5th through 8th graders. We also enjoyed "The Story of the Greeks" by the same author.
This edition is horrible. The print is tiny enough that it is uncomfortable to read WITH a magnifying glass. Also, it is less than half of the original book, containing 40 of the 102 that Guerber included.
Although written for children, although I am 80, and have never studied Roman history it made a very good entry for me. I enjoyed it, and learned a lot.
