It describes the guerrilla war fought by German peasants living in the area of Lüneburg against the Swedes during the Thirty Year's War (1618 - 1648). The peasants after seing their village and homes plundered again and again, decided to fight against the enemy. At night they would sneak out and kill any Swede they might find.""The fighters had two mottos: Help yourself, and God will help you. and Better another blood on your knife, than another's knife in your blood. Their sign was the Wolfsangel ("wolf-hook"), which was meant as a warning to the Swedish intruders to beware."

Good story about the 30 years war around Hannover/Celle and the hardship for the farmers with the changes at/with the different fronts.
It's a great story and very well written, but hard to read for an intermediate student. It has many words not in any of my dictionaries (Pons, Collins or Duden).
